On Saturday, May 7th, you could get FREE tips that could help improve your lawn at Victorian Acres Greenhouses, 1527 34th Avenue SW in Altoona. The event will be held from 8:30-10 am. A demonstration area will be available to show how compost is applied to a lawn after aeration and how this benefits the watershed and your lawn. After mowing, be sure to blow your grass clippings back into your lawn. Clippings will decompose quickly and provide an essential source of nutrients and organic matter for the lawn. Code enforcement and police officers can issue citations to mowing contractors, lawn maintenance companies, and homeowners who fail to properly collect and dispose of this material. Read more

Discover the benefits of having a walkable city

Are you interested in learning the challenges and benefits of making cities more walkable and bike-able? If so, this speaker series may be of interest to you. The free event is tonight, Wednesday, May 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates, 100 Locust St. in Des Moines. To register, visit iowa.uli.org.

The deadline is approaching to apply to be on a Board or Commission

Members of the community can volunteer on a Board or Commission and get involved in their city government. These activities help shape and influence public policy, and some also hear appeals, provide expertise, advocate, receive public concerns, or establish, review, and enforce policies and regulations. Appointments to Pleasant Hill city boards and commissions are made by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

There will be vacancies on the following city boards and commission, beginning July 1, 2016. Applications are being accepted through May 31, 2016.
